We deliver both formal and vocational, skills-based courses through our MGS Skills Academy. These are facilitated by MGS and partner organisations, as well as signposted opportunities that are relevant to museum professionals and volunteers.
The Upskilling and Celebrating Volunteers Project
The Upskilling and Celebrating Volunteers Project is a pilot project supported by the Scottish Government’s Culture Strategy for Scotland. The project aims to help increase local participation and inclusivity in museums through the recruitment of new volunteers.
Each volunteer participating in the project will undertake an accredited Scottish Qualification Authority qualification in Museums and Galleries Practice, which is a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at SCQF level 7. Volunteers will gain a theoretical understanding of the museums sector as well as hands-on experience by undertaking in depth and impactful activities in their host museum. The volunteers’ qualification will be assessed by an experienced and qualified museum professional, trained and supported by Museums Galleries Scotland.
Digital Marketing Modern Apprenticeships
MGS is approved by Skills Development Scotland to deliver Digital Marketing Modern Apprenticeships and currently have capacity to provide a limited number of apprenticeship spaces up until March 2022.
Modern Apprenticeships are open to new and existing employees between the ages of 16 to 29 years old and are a fantastic way to upskill and develop your workforce.

In addition to Modern Apprenticeships there is also the opportunity to get involved with Foundation Apprenticeships. You’ll get early access to future talent, by providing school pupils with real experience of the world of work. Helping them achieve an industry recognised qualification developing skills for a creative future.

Workforce for the Future
Working in partnership with Developing Young Workforce (DYW), Museums and Schools in lower SIMD areas. In this project schools will work to deliver an exhibition in a local museum and learn about the diversity of job roles in the sector and the impact that the arts can have. The ‘Workforce of the Future’ project is due to start at the beginning of 2021 as Museums and Schools begin to reopen and it becomes safe to carry out this kind of work. The current museums and areas involved are Arbroath Signal Tower, Discovery Point in Dundee, The Stirling Smith Museum and Gallery and The Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow. Each Museum will work with a school in their local area from Primary 5 up to Senior 1. We will provide evaluation and case studies for each project to depict the different ways of working in partnership.
Skills for Success Legacy
The Skills For Success Legacy Programme was established following on from the National Lottery Heritage Funded Skills For Success programme, which you can read about here.
From our evaluation we found out that amongst other things it would be beneficial to grow our capacity to deliver work based learning, enable progression and entry routes through vocational learning and offer this as widely as possible. Four Skills For Success learners who are currently working in the sector and have an interest in learning and development qualifications are training to be Workplace Assessors. This means that they will be able to deliver the SVQ in Museums and Galleries Practice to support entry routes into the sector and progression routes for staff. In order to achieve their qualification they must support 2 candidates each through the SVQ in Museums and Galleries Practice. They will use their knowledge of the qualification and vocational learning to enable early career staff to gain their qualification.
By growing our number of Workplace Assessors we will improve our capacity to deliver a variety of qualifications across museums and galleries in order to upskill and support staff.
