About the Event

Are you involved in making acquisitions for your collection but have limited experience of buying in the market? Would you like to develop confidence in purchasing acquisitions and making applications for funding? This workshop aims to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to purchase acquisitions for your collection.

Topics covered include private and commercial sales, bidding at auction, commissioning independent valuations and fundraising for acquisitions. Hazel Williamson will talk about the advice and support available from the National Fund for Acquisitions, David Forsyth will share his experience of buying in the market and Sarah Rothwell will talk about acquiring collections with the support of an Art Fund New Collecting Award. We will be joined by Rachael Browning to talk about the Art Fund’s acquisition programmes, Colin Fraser from auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull with practical advice on bidding at auction and Mark Hall from Culture Perth & Kinross who will share his recent experience of crowdfunding for acquisition. This workshop is aimed at participants who have limited or no experience of purchasing acquisitions for a public collection.

Following this workshop participants should...

  • Have gained valuable insights on buying in the market, including at auction
  • Have an overview of the main funding organisations for acquisitions in Scotland
  • Have gained practical skills in developing funding applications
  • Know where to go for further information and advice
