Board Development Programme
Deadline for applications: Monday 21st January 2019
We've partnered with Social Enterprise Academy to jointly fund and develop a long term board development programme for independent museums across Scotland. The 18 month programme provides support to museum board members in their own venues over a longer period of time, maximising impact to the individual museums and the sector.
By the end of the programme the participating boards will be more aware of governance good practice and the opportunities available to support this. Participants will also be more robust, resilient and have greater confidence about their future.
As part of this 18 month programme participating boards will have three sessions with a Social Enterprise Academy facilitator at mutually convenient time at the museum location or another suitable venue (to be found by host museum). In the first session the facilitator will support the board to identify an issue/challenge or opportunity that they want to focus on. The facilitator will use their skills and experience to work with the board to support them to identify a way forward. All decisions will be agreed and taken by the board.
To ensure long-term support and sustainability the programme will also establish a network of museum boards. MGS will host an event every six months which two representatives of each board will be invited to. This will allow representatives of each board involved in the programme to share experience and support each other. The events will have a focus on a common issue/challenge or priority for the boards participating in this programme.
This programme will be most suited to independent museum boards who are looking to develop more vigorous processes to manage change within their organisations.
To ensure that the programme has a sustainable impact for your organisation, museums are required to commit to the following conditions:
- A quorate of your board will take part in three all board sessions with a Social Enterprise Academy Facilitator from February 2019-August 2020 at a mutually convenient date.
- You will provide a venue for these sessions
- You will send two representatives to attend the three MGS networking events
- You will participate in any evaluation deemed necessary by MGS in relation to this programme.
